A week in Barbados is genuinely the right amount of time. The island is small — 34km long — but it contains enough variety that a week lets you properly experience it without either rushing or running out of things to do. This is exactly how I would plan seven days here, built from actually living on the island.
Before you go, read the Barbados Packing List and the Accommodation Guide to get set up.
Day 1 — Arrival and West Coast Settling In
Land, get to your accommodation, and do not plan anything ambitious for the rest of the day. Walk to the nearest beach, get in the water, have a Banks Beer at a beach bar. Let the jet lag (if you have any) settle.
If you are staying on the west coast, this is a good evening to catch sunset from a beachfront bar — the west coast faces the sun setting directly over the Caribbean Sea.
Day 2 — South Coast and Pebbles Beach
Head to Pebbles Beach near the Hilton — one of the best beaches on the south coast, with clear water and good facilities. Grab a fish cutter from Cuz's Fish Shack in the car park, a Barbados institution.
In the afternoon, swim with sea turtles at Carlisle Bay just north of Pebbles. Read the full turtle swimming guide for exactly where to go.
Day 3 — The Self-Drive Island Tour
This is the big day. Rent a car and do the full self-drive island tour of Barbados — the west coast up to Animal Flower Cave at the north point, across to the dramatic east coast at Bathsheba, and back down through St John's Church and Codrington College. Pack a cooler, wear comfortable shoes, and give yourself the whole day.
Day 3 Tip
Start early — around 8am — to make the most of the daylight and beat the heat on the exposed sections of the drive. Compare car rental rates at DiscoverCars before you book.

Day 4 — Rest Day and Mount Gay Rum Tour
After the ambitious driving day, take it easier. Sleep in, have a slow breakfast, and head to the Mount Gay rum tour in the late morning — book the lunch tour for the Bajan buffet and bottomless rum punch. Follow it with an afternoon on the beach to shake off the rum.
Day 5 — South Coast Deep Dive
Spend the day exploring the south coast properly — Accra Beach, Miami Beach (Enterprise Beach) if you want somewhere quieter, and an evening in St Lawrence Gap for dinner and a look at the nightlife.
If it is a Friday or Saturday, this is the night for Oistins Fish Fry — do not miss it. Local food, cold beers, live music and a genuinely brilliant atmosphere.
Day 6 — West Coast Luxury Day
Spend a day on the calmer west coast — Paynes Bay or Holetown. This is the side of the island for lying in flat turquoise water and doing very little. If you want a splurge, book lunch at one of the west coast's finer restaurants.
Try a proper rum punch at one of the best rum punch spots on the island — this is your week's rum culture wrap-up.
Day 7 — Bridgetown and Departure
Spend your final morning in Bridgetown, the capital — walk the Garrison Savannah, the historic Parliament buildings and the Careenage waterfront. It is walkable, historic and a nice contrast to a week of beaches.
If your flight is later in the day, one last swim before you head to the airport is the right way to close out the week.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — a week is a genuinely good amount of time in Barbados. The island is only 34km long, so you can cover the whole self-drive route, spend proper time on the beaches, do the Mount Gay rum tour and still have relaxed downtime rather than rushing between activities.
